THREE REASONS TO REQUEST A PRESENTATION

1. Representatives from the Marshall County Solid Waste Management District are available for presentations year round!

2. Presentation topics are adaptable to any age level, curriculum and group size.

3. Anyone can schedule a presentation. Educators, students, schools, churches, neighborhood associations, clubs/organizations and businesses can contact the District to reserve a presentation date.

Presentation topics include, but are not limited to:

• The 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle): Topics discussed in this presentation include: the composition of our waste stream, waste generation, where waste goes, and how we can reduce, reuse and recycle our waste.

• Composting: Composting turns yard waste and kitchen scraps into a valuable resource. Good compost is expensive to buy, but free for the making.

• Household Hazardous Waste: Discussion topics will include: common household products that are hazardous to our health and the environment, safety issues, alternatives to hazardous products and proper methods of disposal.

• Environmentally Friendly Shopping- Audiences will learn how to purchase items that can be recycled versus thrown away and how to select items with reduced packaging.

4-R School Awards:
Schools can earn an official plaque from Curby the Recycling Robot by completing four components during a school year:

  • Hosting a speaker or presentation form the District.
  • Participating in a District-sponsored program, such as Eco-Expo, EnviroQuest, town clean up, etc.
  • Organizing a school-wide recycling conscious activity such as a waste-free lunch day or paperless day.
  • Beginning or expanding a school recycling program.

Please congratulate the following Environmental Leaders who have already been recognized as 4-R Schools: Menominee Elementary, Webster Elementary, and LaVille Elementary. Keep up the good work!

Classroom Presentations:
The following programs are currently available for individual classrooms or grade levels:

  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: Recycling basics, 35-45 minutes, Grades K-6.
  • Worms Eat My Garbage: Worm composting Lessons, 45-55 minutes, Grades 2-8.
  • Recycle for Your Health: Learn how to properly handle and dispose of Household Hazardous Waste Materials, 45-55 minutes, Grades 4-9.
  • How do they DO that?: We’ll show you how recycled products are made, as well as some of the neat recycled products that are being made today, 30-45 minutes, Grades 6-Adult.
  • Trash to Treasure: Various holiday crafts made from reusable, recyclable materials, 60 minutes or more, Grades 2-Adult.
  • Who Wants to be an Environmentalist?: That’s right, it’s the environmental version of the famous TV show. And it’s very realistic—we use a PowerPoint program that has the sounds and music from the show! We used it at the 4-H fair and it was a huge hit.

Need a lesson to fit in directly with your curriculum? Give us a call and we can work with you to create a custom presentation to fit your needs!

CURBY the Recycling Robot:
Curby’s interactive presentations and convocations are available for those schools who have received a 4-R Award in a given school year. If your school has received the award in a previous school year, please contact the District to discuss options for continued programming in the new year, as well as how to get another visit from Curby!
